Once the center of Hollywood, an aging actor finds that his fear of failure has made his career dry up, and he is now forced to consider a role in an independent film. While researching the role, he meets Scarlett, a check-out clerk at a Latino community market. The two begin a trek through Los Angeles finding unexpected situations, chance encounters, and personal revelation that neither could ever have anticipated.

The likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines, and sings about a better life. Meanwhile, his tight-knit community faces the challenge of gentrification, losing their homes while trying to better themselves and hold on to their cultures.

Follows the lives of three generations of the Sanchez family, as told by the eldest son. From his father's journey to California in the 1920s, to his brother's tragic rebellion in the 1950s, to the stark realities of modern day, his family struggles to live the American dream.

Based on over 700 interviews in rural Mexican towns where about half the population has left to work in the United States, this film asks why so many Mexicans come to the U.S. and what happens to the families and communities they leave behind.
