Burgess Library Mission Statement

The Marie Blair Burgess Library supports Spartanburg Methodist College by fostering academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, and character development, empowering the community to become lifelong learners and ethical information users.

About the Library

The Marie Blair Burgess Library serves as the intellectual hub of Spartanburg Methodist College by offering a wealth of resources and services to empower students, faculty, and staff in their academic journeys. The Burgess Library offers a comprehensive collection of resources for students, faculty, and staff to utilize, including print resources, electronic resources, computing resources, and online access to various research tools.

The library has a physical collection of about 30,000, including books in print and DVDs. A collection of over 460,000 electronic books (eBooks) complements the print collection. Students, faculty, and staff may also request materials from other South Carolina academic libraries via PASCAL (Partnership Among South Carolina Academic Libraries) or through ILL (interlibrary loan).

Over 130 online research databases are available 24/7 through the library’s website and can be accessed from both on and off campus. These databases provide access to thousands of full-text articles from various academic journals, magazines, and newspapers.

Librarians are happy to assist with any questions regarding library resources and services.

  • Food is allowed in the library. Please be respectful and clean up your trash. Beverages in covered containers are also allowed in the library.
  • Cell phones should be set to silent or vibrate while in the library. Library patrons should make all calls outside of the library.
  • Students may use the computers in the building for personal use, but they may be asked to move if someone needs the computer for academic purposes.
  • Headphones are to be used when listening to any audio on any device and set at a level only the user can hear.
  • Quiet study area is located on the 2nd floor of the library. Quiet study rules are posted throughout the second floor: No loud conversations, no phone calls, phones to be kept on silent, and electronics to be used with headphones.
  • No tobacco use of any kind is permitted on the SMC campus.

Note: All rules are subject to change, and new rules may be added as needed by the library staff.

The library staff strives to provide patrons with spaces and environment conducive to study and research needs. The library does not tolerate behavior from its patrons that disturbs other patrons as they use the library and its collections. Patrons disturbing other library patrons will be asked to amend their behavior and if that proves insufficient, will be asked to leave. Library staff may ask Campus Police for assistance with patrons who are creating a disturbance.

The library enforces the Code of Computing Practices of the College. Appropriate and primary uses of Library computers include searching of library catalog, using library databases, and completing schoolwork. A wireless network is available for access to the internet throughout campus.
