Community Patrons and Usage Policy

The library extends its resources to community members and alumni, fostering a spirit of lifelong learning. To ensure a secure and productive environment for all users, the library maintains a clear check-in process.

Accessing the Library

If a community member or alumnus is interested in using the library, they should call ahead to speak with library staff. During this call, staff will inquire about the purpose of their visit to ensure the library can meet their needs.

If the request is legitimate, library staff will then direct the caller to contact Campus Security at 864-587-4003 to "check in" and receive information about visitor parking on campus.

On-Campus Check-In

Upon arrival on campus, the individual should proceed to the main library entrance. Before entering, they must check in with at the front desk in Buchheit Administration Building. They will need to provide their first and last name. Once they have checked in with at the front desk, a call will be placed with the library to confirm their presence, and access will then be granted.

The library appreciates the cooperation of community patrons and alumni in adhering to these procedures, which help maintain a safe and welcoming space for the entire community.

Community Usage Policy

As an independent institution, SMC provides an academic library for the use of its students, faculty, and staff. Other individuals are welcome to visit and to use the library materials in accordance with the above library policies. The college reserves the right to restrict any individual from using any of its materials, equipment, facilities, or services.

  • Library study and meeting rooms may only be reserved by SMC students and employees.
  • During periods of high use, all study spaces, computers, and seats are reserved for SMC students and employees.
  • Access to library resources is given to patrons in the following order of priority:
    • SMC students, faculty and staff
    • Alumnae
  • In times of peak demand, educational use takes priority over recreational use.
  • Disruptive patrons may be asked to leave at any time.
  • Library patrons are expected to use computer resources responsibly, ethically, and in compliance with relevant laws and any contractual agreements the library has entered into to provide such resources.
  • All children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
