Safety Procedures

All full time and part time library staff need to subscribe to SMC Alerts for their phone and email

Intruder on Campus

  • Lock both front doors (the “key” is kept on the windowsill by the defibrillator).  Close all the blinds.  Turn off the lights.  Inform patrons and recommend they stay in the building.  Remember ALICE training and that you and the patrons have the right to make decisions to keep yourself alive.

Disorderly Patron

If ANY patron gets unruly (loud voice, banging on the table, cursing, refuses to follow directions, etc), walk away and CALL Campus Safety at 864-587-4003.  Do NOT engage.

Fire

  • If the fire alarm goes off, evacuate the building until you are given the all clear.

Tornado

  • Tornado Watch – stay away from windows.  Monitor the local news.  Look for SMC Alerts
  • Tornado Warning – get all patrons to the main floor.  Fit as many people as you can in the library closet, bathrooms, and the space between the bathrooms (between the walls)

Snow/Sleet

  • Follow the directions given by email or SMC Alerts.  We are not necessary/essential personnel.  If you are at home and are told to come to campus, use common sense about the weather in your area and whether it is safe to drive.  Call/text your supervisor if you feel conditions are not safe for driving.

Power Outage

  • With verification from SMC Alerts or email, leave and lock the library.
  • Place books in a Ziplock type freezer bag
  • You can put more than one book in a bag, but put wax paper between books
  • Place books in a freezer
  • Find a large space, paper towels, put a paper towel in every twenty pages
  • As towels get soaked, replace.  Keep replacing until towels are not getting wet.
  • Stand the book up and use a fan to dry the spine
  • Use a press or very heavy books so the book does not buckle
