Circulation Policies

Students and faculty/staff must show their current SMC identification card to checkout library materials. The circulation of reserve materials is determined by the faculty member who submits the reserve request.

Students may check books out for two weeks. Books may be renewed for two more weeks if there are no pending holds. Students may check DVDs out for three days with the option for renewal pending no requests. Students may check out an umbrella for three days.

Faculty/Staff can check books out for four weeks with the option for renewal if there are no requests pending. Faculty/Staff may check DVDs out for 1 week with the option for renewal. Faculty/Staff may check out an umbrella for three days.

Loan periods for materials placed on reserve is set by the professor/librarians.

Patrons are notified by email when materials are overdue. Overdue fines are not charged. If an item has not been returned by the end of the current semester, the patron will be billed by the financial office for the replacement cost of the item. Returning the item, or supplying a replacement, will result in the fine being forgiven.

Damaged, lost, or non-returned items are charged at the replacement cost of the item. Patrons returning undamaged billed library books, multimedia items, or equipment within one year after the original due date will receive a refund.

The Burgess Library follows the SMC guidelines in protecting the confidentiality of patron records. No personally identifiable information is retained beyond the time period necessary for library operations. In the event that personal library records are requested, the library will follow the recommended procedure in the ALA “Policy Concerning Confidentiality of Personally Identifiable Information about Library Users” (Appendix C). The USA Patriot Act supersedes state law. With the advice of the College Legal Counsel, library staff will comply with legal requests for information.

The patrons of the library are full-time and part-time students currently enrolled at Spartanburg Methodist College and SMC faculty and staff.
