Policies and Procedures Manual

Work Study Student Policy

The main function and expectation of a student employee is to maintain a pleasant, helpful, and efficient working environment. The following guidelines are designed to help them accomplish this goal.

  • Student employees must remember they are offering a service to the library's patrons, whether those patrons are staff members, faculty, administrators, community members, or fellow students. They must realize that those they come in contact with, whether in person or on the phone, are developing their impressions of the Library by the student employee's actions and demeanor.
  • Student employees should bear in mind that how they represent the Library is critically important to how the Library is perceived by the campus community. Their physical appearance and dress, their behavior, and their dedication make a difference.
  • Student employees should do all they can to make the patron feel welcome by an enthusiastic greeting and attention to their needs. If a customer's request is something a student employee has not been trained to respond to, they should immediately seek their supervisor to help meet the need.
  • Student employees' phones should be kept in their pockets while they are working. This includes if they are upstairs – student employees should be approachable at all times. Phones should only be used to verify Duo authentications or respond to Teams messages.
  • Headphones are not allowed.
  • There may be times when activity is at a slower pace. During those times, student employees should ask their supervisor if there is anything specific that needs to be done. If not, they may ask to study or do homework. At all times, student employees should remain aware of the comings and goings of people in their assigned area. Student employees should not come to work expecting to study or finish a project; work comes first.
  • The work area should be neat and clean at all times.
